Dementia patient convicted in fast-track court convicted.

A 77-year-old man with severe dementia was convicted in a fast-track court for failing to insure a car he no longer drove.

The man had no memory of receiving a fine from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

Judge Louise Hammond accepted a guilty plea on the man’s behalf, imposing a six-month conditional discharge.

The Government is reviewing the single justice procedure after concerns about vulnerable individuals being convicted.
