Tougher penalties for motorists using mobile phones whilst driving

28th December 2015

The government are set to implement higher fines and penalties for those caught using a mobile phone when driving. The current fixed penalty will increase from £100 to £150 and for those drivers prosecuted the current 3 points will increase. Lorry drivers caught will face having 6 points put on their licence.

Persistent offenders will face being disqualified from driving.

The new initiative is to prevent avoidable road accidents and promote driver and passenger safety.

The Department of transport wish to see using a mobile phone when driving become a social taboo – like not wearing a seatbelt.
