Less common driving offences

In addition to the well know driving offences like speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, other motoring offences although less common, can cost you dearly either in terms of points on your licence, fines or both.

Examples of non-endorsable offences include:

  • Having no valid MOT certificate. Maximum fine £1000.
  • Failure to notify change of ownership to the DVLA. Maximum fine £1000.
  • Defective exhaust/lights. Maximum fine £1000.
  • Seatbelt offences. Maximum fine £500. Applies to adult or child in front seat or child in rear seat.
  • Failing to use appropriate child car seat. Maximum fine of £500.

Examples of endorsable offences include:

  • Defective brakes/steering/tyres. Maximum fine £2500 for each type of offence. In each case endorseable with 3 penalty points. In the case of tyres endorseable with three points for each defective tyre.
  • Fail to comply with traffic sign e.g. contravening a red traffic light, stop sign, double white lines, no entry sign. Maximum fine £1000. 3 penalty points.
  • Seatbelt offences. Maximum fine £500. Applies to adult or child in front seat or child in rear seat.
  • Failing to use appropriate child car seat. Maximum fine of £500.
